a) Research areas:  The activities span from soft matter to engineering materials, from theoretical modelling to device fabrication, from bio-materials to cutting tools and from curiosity driven research to start-up companies including close collaboration with industry on different levels and on different time scales.

We cover topics such as, Biomaterials, Catalysis, High temperature corrosion, Quantum devices and Soft matter. There are more than 50 companies tied to Chalmers materials research through these centres.

b) Strongpoint areas: Our strengths lie in high resolution analytical microscopy (including electron microscopy and atom probe tomography), 3D imaging and spectroscopy and in situ manipulation and measurements including method development. The state-of-the-art platforms and expertise include:

• Atomic resolution imaging, spectroscopy and manipulation • Tomography using holography, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy for 3D reconstruction and also ab-initio calculations for spectral fine structure • in situ manipulation and dynamic measurements using combined STM-TEM/STEM, AFM-TEM/STEM, STM/SEM and AFM/SEM
